The German Homeopathic Union (DHU)-
The harmony of the present, the past, and the future

Each story has its beginning. The starting point for the firm "German Homeopathic Union" was the creation and implementation into practice the quality standards for manufacturing of homeopathic medicinal means by Dr.Wilmar Schwabe (1839-1917). Wilmar Schwabe was the elder son in the drug store owner family from Woggtland. He studied pharmacy in Leipzig, got a Doctor's degree in 1863, and devoted himself to homeopathy from that time onwards. In the mid-19th century homeopathic treatments were in great demand. They were manufactured in drugstores, and each druggist made the remedies according to his own "technology". Due to this there existed many means of producing homeopathic medicines, and their quality and effectiveness were often a matter of great uncertainty.
The situation in the sphere of homeopathic pharmacy of that time did not suit the young scientist. Dr. Wilmar Schwabe developed analytical methods and definitions for the pharmaceutical medicinal goods processing technology, introduced quality control procedures, and set up his own plantations for growing medicinal herbs.
In 1865 Dr. Wilmar Schwabe opened his own enterprise - "The central Homeopathic drugstore of Dr. Wilmar Schwabe". The foundation of this enterprise became a landmark in medical history.
Homeopathic medicinal goods produced by "The central Homeopathic drugstore of Dr. Wilmar Schwabe" were manufactured on an industrial scale in accordance with strict quality control measures. Soon, besides the Leipzig central store, Wilmar Schwabe opened more than 700 drugstores in Germany, Europe, and overseas.
With the opening of the first homeopathic outpatient department in Leipzig Schwabe began his activities in the sphere of medicine and social policy. His social activities - mainly in the sphere of healthcare, and the groundbreaking social care for the invalids and elderly people employed in the firm - received a universal approval.
In 1866 Dr. Wilmar Schwabe founded a publishing company which specialized in the publication of literature on homeopathy for the general public, as well as for the medical workers. Among other things, the company published the "Common Homeopathic Journal", which exists to this day and is considered to be the oldest medical journal in Germany.
Wilmar Schwabe and the enterprises he created helped the spreading of homeopathy throughout the globe in many ways and had a great impact on the quality of homeopathic medicines. The researches he conducted and the scientific research works he published are still vital and are used up to the present day.
In 1872 Dr. Schwabe issued one of the greatest works in the sphere of homeopathic pharmacy - «Pharmacopoea Homoeopathica Polyglottica» which contained detailed instructions on the producing of homeopathic goods. The creation of this pharmacopoeia became one of the most important landmarks in homeopathic history.
In 1934 it was published under the title of "The pharmacopoeia of Dr. Wilmar Schwabe" and became the compulsory ground for producing homeopathic goods in Germany. It was very soon translated into English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian and gained worldwide approval.
"The pharmacopoeia of Dr. Wilmar Schwabe" was later used as a basis of the "Homeopathic pharmacopoeia of Germany", issued in 1978.
In 1917 the management of the firm was handed over to the founder's son - Dr. Wilmar Schwabe II. In 1946 the plant was moved from Leipzig to Karlsruhe, where was founded the "Dr. Wilmar Schwabe GmbH" enterprise in 1947. The enterprise that remained in Leipzig was nationalized and later renamed in "The Public enterprise Leipzig Pharmaceutical plant".
In Karlsruhe the third generation of the Schwabe family began new scientific research and development of phytotherapeutical medicinal means. The Schwabe enterprise continues successfully producing homeopathic and phytotherapeutical goods up to the present day.
The interest in homeopathy, as well as in safe methods of treatment was constantly increasing.
To meet the growing demand and to concentrate efforts in this sphere the firm set up an independent enterprise, "The German Homeopathic Union" (Deutsche Homoopathie-Union, DHU) in 1961. The union specializes in the production of high-quality homeopathic medicinal means.
Today "The German Homeopathic Union" DHU, being the leader on the market of homeopathic goods in Germany, supports the preservation of the traditions of the production of high-quality homeopathic goods of Hanneman and the firm's founder, Dr. Wilmar Schwabe. At the same time the plant fully sticks to modern principles of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) in terms of production and quality control.
The DHU is proud of the fact that while manufacturing the medical goods, it undertakes a complete cycle - from growing medical herbal raw goods, to the production of ready medical forms.
In the manufacturing process are used raw goods of herbal, mineral and animal origin.
Most medicinal herbs that are used in the DHU manufacturing process are grown on native plantations, located in Stafford, near Karlsruhe. The DHU plantations provide optimal conditions for the ecologically pure growing of plants. They are a certified agricultural enterprise. A couple of hundred types of plants are cultivated here in optimal conditions of greenhouses and open soil.
Because the DHU does not use chemical fertilizers, the medicinal plants are grown in special conditions of a self-regulating biosystem.
The constant quality control of the basic conditions, undertaken by independent experts, is the guarantee of the stable high quality of raw herbal goods used in the production of medicinal means.
Due to the particular climatic conditions in Germany, some exotic plants are grown on plantations owned by the company in South Africa, Ireland and other countries, and are also bought from certified manufacturers abroad.
The DHU is the most cutting-edge homeopathic medicinal means manufacturer in the world.
To meet the constantly growing requirements of pharmaceutical manufacturers in the future, in December 2003 the company decided to broaden their production sites and to introduce new schemes of production technology, logistics, and information technology.
In October 2006 the firm "German Homeopathic Union" opened a new production complex. The building took more than three years and cost more that 25 m euros. This investment is yet another sign of the complete confidence of the firm's governing board in the ever-growing demand for homeopathic medical means throughout the world. With the fulfillment of this project the DHU is adequately equipped to further strengthen its leading role in the sphere of homeopathic medicinal means production in many world countries in the next few years.
Thanks to its wide range of goods, the German Homeopathic Union is one of the world's major homeopathic medicinal means manufacturers. The range of the medicinal means is represented by homeopathic mono- and complex preparations, and also the salts of Dr. Schussler.
The DHU complex homeopathic preparations have strict therapeutic indications. Every preparation consists of several ingredients. The complex DHU preparations are noted for their proven high effectiveness and high tolerance; they can be used over a large period of time, by all family members, including pregnant and feeding mothers, as well as infants.
The "German Homeopathic Union" began its activities in Russia in 1996, opening its office and being the first foreign company to offer especially original complex homeopathic preparations. The DHU medicinal means immediately became generally renowned by physicians of different scopes, as well as by an enormous number of patients. Today the company supplies the Russian market with 10 preparations, which are used in pediatrics, gynecology, allergology, dermatology, rheumatology and neurology. Other preparations are in the process of registration and their launching into the Russian market is to be expected by 2010.
